Chemical flooding technique to recover oil. [addition of sodium tripolyphosphate]

Patent ·
OSTI ID:7301208
The addition of sodium tripolyphosphate (a water-soluble polyphosphate) to a micellar solution reduces the amount of surfactant required, improves the mobility of the solution, prevents precipitation of the surfactants and increases the multivalent cation tolerance, reduces adsorption of the surfactants, and appears to improve oil recovery efficiency (oil desaturation data). The micellar solution, which was tested in Berea sandstone cores, contained oil-soluble sodium petroleum sulfonates (micelle forming) and water-soluble sodium petroleum sulfonates, electroytes, water and sodium tripolyphosphate. Pusher 520 may be added to the micellar solution without inhibiting the positive effects of the phosphate.
