Ion microprobe investigation of the high temperature decalibration of Al/sub 2/O/sub 3/ insulated Pt-Rh thermocouples

Tantalum sheathed Pt/Pt-Rh thermocouples used in high temperature service were sectioned and analyzed by ion microprobe analysis to determine their failure mode. Failure was shown to be due to reaction of the Pt and Pt-Rh thermoelements with the Al/sub 2/O/sub 3/ insulator. (GHT)
