Ultrasonic shear and longitudinal wave velocities in CMT graphite and carbon--carbon (226) from 70/sup 0/F to 5400/sup 0/F

The temperature dependence of the shear and longitudinal velocities in CMT graphite and carbon-carbon (226) composites was determined from 70/sup 0/F to 5400/sup 0/F. A pulse echo method using 0.75 inch diameter rods of 8 and 7.5 inch lengths were used. Indexed regions of the rods were placed in the hot zone of the furnace in which measurements were made of the delay times of ultrasonic echoes from a known distance in the rod at temperature.
