Separation of xenon isotopes in an rf gas discharge

The separation of Xe isotopes in an rf discharge with a traveling magnetic wave is studied. An enrichment of approx.6% in a quasibinary mixture of Xe/sup 136/ and Xe/sup 129/ is attained in a cylindrical water-cooled chamber 1 m long and 0.1 m in diameter at working pressures of approx.10/sup -2/--10/sup -1/ torr and at an rf power level of approx.5 kW applied to the plasma. Over the pressure range studied, the observed separation is due primarily to thermodiffusion, which is itself due to the radial temperature gradient.
