Present and future trends in auto fuel consumption

A review is given of talks presented at the ''Energy and the Automobile'' session of the National Automobile Engineering Meeting held in May, 1973. Topics discussed include: (1) the effect of present and future emission controls on fuel economy; (2) the prospects of alternative power plants (Stirling, Rankine, gas turbine, stratified charge, Wankel, and diesel engines); (3) the effect of components and accessories on fuel consumption; (4) changes in auto fuel consumption from 1965 to 1973; and (5) the feasibility of alternative fuels, including methanol, ethanol, and hydrogen.
