Laboratory studies using Berea sandstone cores gave improved recoveries by injecting an overbased anionic waterflood additive comprising (1) a water-soluble low molecular weight alkali metal hydrocarbon sulfonate having an equivalent weight of about 200 to about 400, (2) a water-insoluble high molecular weight alkali metal hydrocarbon sulfonate having an equivalent weight of about 400 to about 600, and (3) an overbasing amount of base component such as an alkali metal hydroxide. Connate waters having calcium and magnesium ions were treated with a chelating agent or trisodium phosphate monohydrate.
