Microgel in polyacrylamide solutions and its role in mobility control

A filterable microgel contained in solutions of partially hydrolyzed polyacrylamides either contributes substantially to the resistance factor or may be its sole cause. This microgel is probably formed by cross-linking of the polymer molecules into larger gel-like aggregates. The amount of cross-linked material increases with increasing degree of hydrolysis, and its formation is further enhanced by heating; the cross-linking mechanism is not yet completely understood. Consequently, more microgel of larger size is formed when the polymers which are highly hydrolyzed are oven-dried at a high temperature. To be an effective mobility control agent, the polymer solution must contain the proper amount of microgel of the proper size. If the microgel is excessively cross-linked into large particles, the porous medium is completely plugged. Laboratory studies using Berea sandstone discs were conducted.
