The suppression of the flute instability by high-frequency oscillations of the magnetic lines of force and by a magnetosonic wave is analyzed. A study is made of both the usual case, in which the frequency of the high-frequency magnetic field, ..cap omega.., is higher than the collision frequency ..nu../sub e i/, and the case in which ..nu../sub e i/ is larger than ..cap omega... This latter case can occur in plasma centrifuges. It is shown that even at comparatively low amplitudes of the alternating field, H/sub 1/H/sub 0/approx. (1--10) x10/sup -4/, the flute instability can be suppressed.
