Oil and gas in Butler County, Kentucky

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:7297019
The primary and secondary production of crude oil from very shallow reservoirs, particularly the Hardinsburg sandstone of Mississippian age, has been highly successful in Butler County. Extensive drilling of the shallow sandstones has located many stratigraphically entrapped oil pools, but has left virtually untested the deeper zones which remain prospective for oil and gas exploration. The Moorman syncline area north of the Pennyrile fault system is especially attractive for oil and gas exploration by deeper drilling; the area south of the Pennyrile fault system needs additional drilling to evaluate the reservoirs in the Mississippian and older units which are oil productive in adjoining counties.
