A process for extracting hydrocarbon material from shale and similar earthy material is described, which consists in reducing the material to be treated by mechanical action to a pulverized condition, subjecting it in a first container to a continuous agitating movement, to a heat treatment, and to the action of dry steam. The gases and vapors generated in the first container are collected and the treated material is conducted into a second container and subjected to a temperature higher than that in the first container to generate hydrocarbon vapors and dry the material. The generated vapors are condensed.
