Gulf Coast salt dome cap-rock-hosted Zn-Pb-Ba [+-] Ag deposits, which have been documented at the Hockley (Texas) and Winnfield (Louisiana) domes, are similar to Mississippi Valley-type deposits in several respects. These include: (1) sphalerite, galena, and barite as the principal ore'' minerals, with calcite and pyrite as the principal gangue minerals; (2) abundant textural evidence of open-space precipitation of ore and gangue minerals; (3) mineralization hosted by carbonate racks showing some evidence of dissolution and brecciation; and (4) apparent low temperature of ore mineral deposition. Moreover, the often-proposed genetic link between Mississippi Valley-type deposits and sedimentary basins, metal-rich brines, and evaporites can be accepted with some degree of certainty for Gulf Coast cap-rock deposits because of their geologic setting. Data presented in this communication indicate that Zn-Pb sulfide mineralization in cap rock at the Hazlehurst salt dome, Mississippi, formed by the mixing of metal-rich brines with sulfide produced by in situ biogenic sulfate reduction. Therefore, ore textures and geochemical characteristics exhibited by this occurrence may provide some insights into the genesis of Mississippi Valley-type deposits formed by similar processes elsewhere.
