Eutectoid transformation of delta-ferrite in Fe--Mo--C alloys

The transformation of delta-ferrite to a eutectoid mixture of austenite and an alloy carbide is examined in detail. The growth rate is analyzed in terms of long-range diffusion of carbon and partitioning of the alloy element between the two growing phases by means of volume diffusion and boundary diffusion. The rate controlling mechanisms are identified by producing the transformation through carburization under various carbon activities. Theoretical values are obtained by a calculation based upon a thermodynamic description of the phase diagram.
