Technological and social measures to conserve energy

Book ·
OSTI ID:7294650
A gradual transition to stabilized energy consumption, at a rate consistent with environmental and resource limits, is the only long-term answer to the energy shortage. Two basic approaches: (1) measures to increase energy use efficiency and (2) measures to change attitudes to accept no-growth philosophy, are used in a simulation model to identify trends resulting from energy policies. Higher efficiency will result from technological improvements, and attitude changes will develop during the period of primary socialization. Increased efficiency alone will only postpone the problem. Efforts to change attitudes from competition to community and emphasizing non-material values will have a gradual impact, but working patterns will need early adjustment if widespread unemployment is to be avoided.
