The apparatus described includes a furnace containing a radiant section with heating coils and a convection section. A plurality of catalyst chambers are mounted in the convection section, and means are provided for passing hydrocarbons first through the coils and thence through the catalyst chambers. Means are also included for burning carbonaceous materials from spent catalyst in the chambers thereby producing hot gases, and means for utilizing the heat of the hot gases in the radiant section of the furnace are included.
