Evaporation of polonium during slide preparation

Evaporation of the activity had not been expected in the assay of polonium. However, it was found that, with many methods of drying, the loss of activity into the air from polonium mounts on glass slides was high. There was also a loss of activity, though to a smaller extent, from polonium samples dried on metal slides. The loss of activity was in inverse relationship to the drying time and temperature. A drying method is presented which provides for an even temperature over the entire heating area, controlled at approximately 100/sup 0/C. This method can be used with no evaporation loss in all anticipated assays of waste solutions.
