This paper describes participation by the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory`s Atmospheric Release Advisory Capability (ARAC) in the 1994 European Tracer Experiment (ETEX). ARAC is a real-time emergency-response center, operating a suite of numerical models which simulate the advection and diffusion of airborne releases, and which calculate estimates of the downwind concentration of the released material. The ETEX scenario involved actual releases of inert tracer gases into the atmosphere, with detection by samplers at many locations across Europe, allowing subsequent comparison between detected values and the values predicted at each sampler location by the exercise participants. To prepare for ETEX, ARAC made only minor changes to its operational models, primarily related to the large area covered by the plume. The ARAC response to ETEX was similar to that for a release at any non-supported location. Results based on various externally-supplied wind fields will be discussed.
