Managing construction services

The proliferation of independent power projects has seen a shift from the traditional power industry philosophy for procuring construction-related services. Developers of independent power generation projects increasingly view the providers of construction-related services as partners-with the expectation that each will share to some degree the risks attendant to project development. In today's world, owners no longer assume all risks of cost or schedule overruns - typically requiring lump-sum, design/build contracts as the preferred method of project delivery. As well, owners have found they cannot simply shift in these lump-sum contracts all risk of contingencies to the engineering and contracting firms, since this will result in inflated contract prices with the potential for adversarial relationships. Thus, in independent power construction, the process of risk identification, allocation and management becomes vital to a successful project. The process must be considered at every stage of project development. Following a set of guides in managing risks in the procurement and management process of power generation construction can be helpful.
