Prospects for cosmic x-ray spectroscopy. [Review]

Journal Article · · Comments Astrophys. Space Phys.; (United States)

During the past year excess emission at about 7 keV has been observed in the spectra of supernova remnants and binary x-ray sources and clusters of galaxies. The feature is probably a complex of Kx lines of highly ionized iron. If so, these observations comprise the advent of cosmic x-ray spectroscopy, a new science that promises to reveal the kind of information on the physics of binary x-ray sources, active galaxies, and intergalactic gas that optical spectroscopy has extracted from the light of stars, galaxies, and nebulae. X-ray emission observations and possibly observations are discussed regarding various celestial objects. (JFP)
