Mechanism of oxidation of hydrogen on vanadium pentoxide

In this paper it is shown that the rate of hydrogen oxidation in the presence of vanadium pentoxide depends on the composition of the reaction mixture. This dependence can be described satisfactorily by the Langmuir--Schwab equation for the kinetics of heterogeneous reactions in a wide range of hydrogen/oxygen ratios at 400-500/sup 0/C. The data obtained suggest the heterogeneous nature of the process. The observed deviation from the theory at high relative hydrogen concentrations can be explained by the existence of chemical nonhomogeneity of the vanadium pentoxide surface resulting from its partial reduction during the catalytic oxidation of hydrogen.
