RFracture tests were conducted on surface flawed Si/sub 3/N/sub 4/ bend specimens as function of surface removal. Results show that residual stresses at the Knoop microhardness indentation affect fracture of the controlled surface flaw beneath the indentation. Annealing was found to heal surface flaws and because of this, the relative contribution of residual stresses to the effects of annealing on the critical stress intensity factor in Si/sub 3/N/sub 4/ could not be assessed.
