An apparatus is described for distilling, carbonizing, or vaporizing solid carbonaceous materials, comprising a chamber or retort that is adapted to receive solid carbonaceous material and a perforated take-off duct that constitutes the sole outlet for the gases, vapors, and liquids evolved from the material in the coking zone. The lower end of the take-off duct communicates with a suction conduit. A means for automatically relieving pressure produced in the chamber by the gases evolved from the material outside of the coking zone is provided.
