A major innovative improvement in high-voltage direct current (HVDC) circuit breakers was field tested. The initial tests checked the breakers' ability to handle both short distance and remote electrical faults as well as a load break. Data gathered from the installed prototype will make further evaluation of its potential for interconnecting dc transmission systems. A unique design separates breaker functions into three individual functions of (1) carrying a continuous steady-state current, (2) interrupting fault or load current and transferring it to a branch, and (3) absorbing the system energy. Spin-off components based on the dc breaker design were also developed. (DCK)
