Nuclear multifragmentation processes may show features such as intermittency that signal scale-invariant properties of fluctuations in the fragment distributions. We test this behavior using several models and show that intermittency may be caused by a combination of finite-size effects and the mixing of fragmentation events corresponding to different initial conditions.
