The reaction of the tributylphosphine--cobaloxime(I) complex with 1,4-dibromobutane forms, in succession, 4-bromobutylcobaloxime and a 1,4-butenyldicobaloxime, BCo(dmgH)/sub 2/(CH/sub 2/)/sub 4/Co(dmgH)/sub 2/B. The latter complex with B = H/sub 2/O undergoes successive dealkylation reactions with Hg/sub aq//sup 2 +/, forming first (H/sub 2/O)Co(dmgH)/sub 2/(CH/sub 2/)/sub 4/Hg/sup +/ and then Hg(CH/sub 2/)/sub 4/Hg/sup 2 +/. The organocobaloximes also undergo protonation equilibria at oxime oxygen positions. Quantitative studies of the rates and equilibria of these reactions are reported, along with data for the comparison complex n-butylcobaloxime.
