A spectral method with a time resolution of approx.1 ..mu..sec is used to study the population kinetics of the excited levels of the N/sub 2/ molecule in the C/sup 3/..pi../subu/ and B/sup 3/..pi../subg/ states and to study the rotational temperature T/subr/ during the development of an rf induction discharge at a pressure of 0.1 torr. The mechanisms for the level population are discussed. (AIP)
