A review is made of the role of weak neutral current interactions in astrophysical gravitational collapse events. It is noted that through neutral currents all three species of neutrinos (and anti-neutrinos) are emitted, with roughly an equipartition of energy. This enabled the observed [bar [nu]][sub [ital e]] flux from SN 1987A to be found in good agreement with expectations from the emission of a neutron star's binding energy during the collapse. Contrary to some mistaken opinions, neutral currents are not the reason for neutrino trapping in the central core. It is true that neutral current cross-sections increase the neutrino opacity, but trapping would occur with charged currents alone. A general review of neutrino emission and a comparison with SN 1987A is made.
