Population inversion inferred from intensity measurements in stationary recombing He plasma

Journal Article · · Phys. Rev. Lett.; (United States)
Stationary population inversion between the low excited states of He/sup +/ has been observed in a helium plasma in contact with neutral helium. The ratio of population densities as deduced from Lyman line intensities is n/sub 2//g/sub 2/:n/sub 3//g/sub 3/:n/sub 4//g/sub 4/:n/sub 5//g/sub 5/ = 1:06:1.1:1.2, where n/sub i//g/sub i/ is the population density with the principal quantum number i. The mechanism leading to the population inversion is discussed.
