Solar magneto-atmospheric waves. II. A model for running penumbral waves

A simple two-layer model of a sunspot penumbra is used to study the mode of running penumbral waves. Exact solutions of the linearized wave equation, not limited to the small-wavelength approximation, are employed in each layer. The lowest ''plus'' eigenmode of magneto-atmospheric waves in the model penumbra is in good agreement with observations of running penumbral waves. The results indicate that running penumbral waves should be observable in a photospheric spectral line. (AIP)
