Continuous process for scrubbing SO/sub 2/ from a gas stream with CO regeneration and CO/sub 2/ stripping

Patent ·
OSTI ID:7280089
A continuous scrubbing process for the removal of sulfur dioxide from flue gas and which controls sulfate by-product formation common in other processes is described. A conventional alkaline procedure is coupled with a regeneration procedure using thiosulfate as an intermediate in a multistep operation designed to convert the sulfite compound contained in the rich absorbent stream to hydrogen sulfide, rather than an attempt to directly reduce the sulfite compound to sulfide in a single step operation. This sulfite-to-thiosulfate-to-sulfide route provides a regeneration procedure which facilitates careful control of by-product formation during the regeneration operation and enables the production of a regenerated absorbent stream which can be directly recycled to the scrubbing step. This allows the system to be operated in a closed-loop fashion with respect to absorbent stream.
