Magnetic properties of the samarium-gadolinium alloy system

Measurements, in a low (up to 1,500 gauss) applied field, of the magnetizations of samples from the entire samarium-gadolinium alloy system were performed. Susceptibilities, where appropriate, were calculated using a slope method and the magnetic transition temperatures were determined. The magnetic behavior of the alloy system clearly divides into three groupings. The gadolinium-rich alloys are ferromagnetic with a decreasing Curie temperature as samarium concentration is increased. The samarium-rich alloys show the two antiferromagnetic transitions seen in pure samarium with slight shifts in transition temperatures. The intermediate concentration alloys show evidence of long range magnetic ordering, although the crystalline structure appears to be somewhat disordered. Evidence for both ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic orderings are found in this group. A magnetic phase diagram for the alloy system is proposed.
