Skeletal isomerization of C[sub 4] and C[sub 5] olefins for increased ether production
- UOP, Des Plaines, IL (United States)
Upgrading of C[sub 4] and C[sub 5] olefins for ether production within a refinery or an ethylene complex is becoming increasingly important. Ethers such as methyl tertiary butyl ether (MTBE), ethyl tertiary butyl ether (ETBE), tertiary amyl methyl ether (TAEE) will have a major role in reformulating gasoline to reduce automobile emissions. Ether production from the FCC and steam cracker C[sub 4] and C[sub 5] olefin-rich streams is limited due to low reactive isoolefins concentration. Skeletal isomerization of normal butenes and normal pentenes to their respective isoolefins is a key step in increasing the reactive isoolefins content of these streams to increase ether production capacity.
