Preliminary research into the application of high power Nd-YAG lasers for welding indicate a dependency of the occurrence of weld discontinuities on processing parameters such as pulse duty cycle, travel speed, etc. The size and distribution of of weld features have been characterized using synchrotron microtomography, using facilities at the National Synchrotron Light Source. The ability of this technique to image defects such as gross and minor porosity, and centerline cracking, enables a metrology of interior surfaces which cannot be provided by metallurgical sectioning techniques alone.
