Modified variational method for scattering

Journal Article · · Phys. Rev. Lett.; (United States)
In the variational approach to scattering, one traditionally adopts at trial function of the form J/sub t/(r) = summation/sub i/C/sub i/phi + j/sub l/(r) + lambda/sub t/g (r) n/sub l/(r), where the phi/sub i/ are square-integrable functions, lambda/sub t/ is the tangent of the trial phase shift, j/sub l/(r) and n/sub l/(r) are, respectively, the regular and irregular Riccati-Bessel functions, and g (r) cuts n/sub l/(r) off at the origin. A modified form for the trial function is suggested and used in the determination of phase shifts in the static-exchange hydrogen problem.
