Anisotropic EPR spectra detected at 30/sup 0/K in ..gamma..-irradiated powdered BaGeF/sub 6/, K/sub 2/SnF/sub 6/, and BaPbF/sub 6/ have been assigned to the hexafluoride anion radicals GeF/sub 6//sup 3 -/, SnF/sub 6//sup 3 -/, and PbG/sub 6//sup 3 -/, respectively. These species are members of a series of paramagnetic hexafluorides of the elements of groups 4 to 7 which constitutes one of the largest known groups of isoelectronic free radicals. The nature of the semioccupied orbital in this type of radical is discussed in the light of unpaired electron spin densities computed from the measured hyperfine interactions for the hexafluorides.
