Dynamic Underground Stripping (DUS) is a combination of several technologies targeted to remediate soil and ground water contaminated with organic compounds. DUS is effective both above and below the water table and is especially well suited for sites with interbedded sand and clay layers. The main technologies which comprise DUS are: (1) steam injection at the periphery of a contaminated area to heat permeable subsurface areas, vaporize volatile compounds bound to the soil, and drive contaminants to centrally located vacuum extraction wells; (2) electrical heating of less permeable clays and fine-grained sediments to vaporize contaminants and drive them into the steam zone; and (3) underground imaging, primarily Electrical Resistance Tomography (ERT), which delineates heated areas to ensure total cleanup and process control.
