An exhaust gas recirculation system for reducing nitrogen oxide emissions from automotive internal combustion engines is described in which the rate or amount of exhaust gases recirculated into the intake manifold of the engine is controlled in relation to the operating conditions of the engine. A device for supplying secondary air into the exhaust is also provided. An exhaust gas recirculation conduit communicates at one end with the exhaust manifold and at the other end with the intake manifold. A flow control valve is disposed in the exhaust gas recirculation conduit to control the rate or amount of exhaust recirculation. The flow control valve is responsive to the pressure of secondary air which in turn is controlled in response to variations in intake manifold vacuum.
