Ferroelectric properties of pyrochlore-structure PbBiZrNbO/sub 7/

Lead-bearing quaternary oxides with the pychlore structure were examined; in three of these (PbBiTiNbO/sub 7/,PbDyTiNbO/sub 7/, and PbBiZrNbO/sub 7/) there are peaks on the temperature dependence of the dielectric constant. These compounds lie at the center of the PbO--A/sub 2/O/sub 3/--BO/sub 2/--Nb/sub 2/O/sub 5/ tetrahedra (where A = Bi, Dy; B = Ti, Zr). X-ray phase and dta studies of sections in the system go with examination of single crystals to indicate that distinct compounds are produced, not solid solutions based on simple A/sub 2/B/sub 2/O/sub 7/ pyrochlores or pyrochlore-type A/sub 3/BO/sub 7/ compositions (with A = Pb, Bi, Dy; B = Nb, Ti, Zr). All the compounds had the cubic pyrochlore cell, while PbBiZrNbO/sub 7/ showed a small tetragonal distortion (c/a = 1,005); the unit-cell parameters and distortion type were determined using a TuR M62 diffractometer made by Zeiss in Eastern Germany. The synthesis temperatures and sintering temperatures are given in a table together with x-ray and dielectric data.
