Investigations into the feasibility of high power laser window materials. Semiannual technical report No. 1

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:7273272
A test facility is being constructed for testing laser window material. This will use the focused beam from a 15 kW cw laser at 10.6 micrometers or other available lasers. Provision for cooling the window is included and also instrumentation for measuring optical and mechanical effects. Forty-seven natural diamonds have been tested to find the correlation between the uv absorption spectrum, the ir absorption spectrum and the absorption coefficient beta at 10.6 micrometets. Transparency at .253 micrometer is roughly correlated with low values of beta. A water cooled diamond window holder is described. A specimen of single crystal CaF/sub 2/ and another of pressure induced recrystalized CaF/sub 2/ were exposed to a 20 J, 5 ..mu..s 6.7 x 10/sup 7/ W/cm/sup 2/ pulse of 2.8 micrometer laser radiation with no apparent damage.
