The course of a borehole is determined with a logging tool that has a gravity-sensitive device such as a two-axis linear accelerometer and a single gimbal gyroscope, which indicates the rotation of the instrument package about its longitudinal axis. An electric tachometer generates a signal representative of the length of the cable in the hole.
