Interfacial reactions between TiB2 and SiC fibers and Ni3Al matrix were investigated using high-modulus SM 1040 SiC fibers, TiB2/Mo fibers, and TiB2-coated B4C/B fibers in Ni3Al matrix. Chemical compatibility between fiber and matrix was investigated after thermal exposures, followed by analyses using SEM, EDAX, EMPA, and ion microprobe mass analysis. Results showed that the TiB2/Mo fibers reacted with Ni3Al at elevated temperatures much more quickly than did the TiB2-coated B4C/B fibers. TiB2 effectively inhibited Al and Cr diffusion into the B4C fibers. Cracks and porosity within the TiB2 greatly accelerated the diffusion rate of Ni and provided a surface diffusion path for Al and Cr. The SM 1040 SiC fibers were largely consumed during processing, with the formation of complex silicides. 13 refs.
