The Mississippian stratigraphic system of northern Arkansas was recently reinterpreted using sequence stratigraphy concepts. This paper attempts to apply this coeval sequence to central Tennessee. Lower Mississippian rocks can be correlated along a north-south line from central Kentucky across Tennessee and into the Warrior Basin of Alabama. This involves deposits on a clastic shelf, starved shelf and deep clastic basin overlain by a classic shallow marine carbonate system. Although there are overall similarities between the Arkansas and Tennessee systems, the combination of two clastic source areas, a deep marine shale-porcellanite couplet and a classic shallow marine carbonate ramp make the concept and terminology of sequence stratigraphy difficult to apply to the Lower Mississippian of central Tennessee.
