Absolute magnitude of first-ranked cluster galaxies as a function of cluster richness

The conclusion is that no statistical theory based on real luminosity functions is capable of explaining the observed magnitude-richness relation. The data seem to require a uniqueness about the first few galaxies in clusters that makes their absolute luminosities nearly independent of cluster population. (AIP)
