Project METROMEX has been a multi-agency research program involving an investigation of inadvertent weather modification at St. Louis, Missouri. The overall research goals for Project METROMEX are: To identify the effects of urbanization on the frequency and intensity of various aspects of atmospheric behavior, among them precipitation production and related severe weather; to identify the factors of urbanization which are causative agents of the observed effects, with a view to the possibilities for purposeful manipulation and management of these factors in the future; to identify the physical processes of the atmosphere through which the observed effects are produced, and to begin assessment of the present-day nature and magnitude of the impact of these modifications to atmospheric behavior on the wider environment-related issues of society. Data obtained through 1975 are reported. (CH)
