Magnetic properties of transition metal and rare earth metal clusters

In this dissertation, results of Stern-Gerlach type magnetic deflection experiments are reported. Primarily, these experiments were conducted on cobalt and gadolinium clusters, which are ferromagnetic in the bulk. Cobalt exhibit superparamagnetic behavior, with a magnetic moment per atom of 2.24 [+-] 0.14[mu][sub B] for N = 65-215. Gadolinium exhibits superparamagnetic behavior for certain clusters, while other clusters exhibit behavior consistent with the moment being locked to their crystal lattice. In both cases, the moments are considerably reduced from the bulk values. Recent calculations have indicated the possibility of large permanent magnetic moments for clusters of non-ferromagnetic materials. Stern-Gerlach measurements of aluminum, chromium, palladium and vanadium clusters have been performed, none of which are ferromagnetic in the bulk. No deflections were observed in any of these systems. Upper limits of the magnetic moments are reported.
