A procedure is described for the microscopial determination of the mean maximum reflectance in oil of polished surfaces of the physical components present in bituminous and anthracite coal. The briquet sample is examined in a systematic scheme of transection so that the entire surface of the briquet will be sampled for the component being measured. The transect spacings should be such that about 50 readings are obtained on each of two briquets per sample. The method is usually applied to the determination of vitrinite. (BLM)
