Al[sub 2]O[sub 3]/Y[sub 2]O[sub 3]-doped ZrO[sub 2] composite powders with 50 mol% Al[sub 2]O[sub 3] prepared by the hydrazine method. As-prepared powders are mixtures of AlO(OH) gel and amorphous ZrO[sub 2] solid solutions containing Y[sub 2]O[sub 3] and Al[sub 2]O[sub 3]. The formation process leading to [alpha]-Al[sub 2]O[sub 3]-t-ZrO[sub 2] composite powders is examined. Hot isostatic pressing is performed for 2 h at 1,400 C under 196 MPa using [theta]-Al[sub 2]O[sub 3]-t-ZrO[sub 2] composite powders. The resulting dense, sintered [alpha]-Al[sub 2]O[sub 3]-t-ZrO[sub 2] composites show excellent mechanical strength.
