New federal offshore leases awarded off southern California and in the Gulf of Alaska, and to be offered at scheduled 1976 sales off the east coast of the U.S. and in lower Cook Inlet, will lead to appraisal of the uncertain gas and oil potential of these virgin areas. New discoveries are being developed along the edge of the continental shelf in the northern Gulf of Mexico, in central Louisiana and along the border of the Rockies in southwestern Wyoming. Important deep pays are being found in older fields, and with the stimulus of increased prices, economically marginal fields are being extended. Frontier exploration in Canada has been curtailed, but important discoveries have been made in the Alberta foothills.
