The photophysical properties of a surfactant-like zinc porphyrin and its diacid derivative, covalently attached, through a bipyridine unit, to a RuO{sub 2} cluster, are described. Intramolecular electron transfer from the excited zinc porphyrin to the bound RuO{sub 2} particles has been studied by fluorescence and flash photolysis techniques in homogeneous solution and in both fluorescence intensity and triplet yield by 95-97%. The lifetime of the zinc porphyrin triplet state is unaffected by binding to RuO{sub 2}, whereas the singlet stat lifetime is greatly shortened, suggesting electron transfer from the porphyrin excited singlet state to the RuO{sub 2} cluster. For the corresponding diacid porphyrin-RuO{sub 2} system, a diminution of the fluorescence intensity by 91% is observed.
