Concentration of plutonium(IV) and europium by coprecipitation with calcium cabonate
An investigation was made of the coprecipitation of plutonium(IV) and europium with calcium carbonate over a range of concentrations of the elements from 10/sup -9/ to 10/sup -6/-10/sup -5/ M. It was found that more than 99 percent of the europium is trapped by the precipitate regardless of the composition of the solution or the amount of carrier. The relation is more complex for plutonium. Optimal conditions were determined for quantitative isolation of plutonium(IV) and europium with CaCO/sub 3/ when present in the solution together. It was found that coprecipitation with calcium carbonate may be used as a method in analysis for concentration of tetravalent plutonium and trivalent elements (europium and americium) from dilute solutions.
