OSTI ID:7265447
Economic costs and health effects of air pollution are considered. Particulates, sulfur oxides, hydrocarbons, carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxides, odors, and smog are discussed in terms of their origins, concentrations, effects, and fates. Federal programs for air pollution control, with emphasis on stationary source standards, are described. Activities of the EPA are reviewed in financial and technical assistance to state and regional control of air pollution, motor vehicle emission control, air quality surveillance, and research and development. The state of development and cost of industrial air pollution control equipment, including that for electrostatic precipitation, gas absorption, vapor incineration, and flue gas desulfurization, is analyzed. Potential processes for the commercial production of high quality, pollution-free gas from coal are evaluated. Past, present, and future markets for goods and services for air pollution control in engineering and construction services, fans, and blowers, waste water treatment and disposal, ductwork and stacks, and process controls are investigated. The air pollution control industry is considered, and a comprehensive list of equipment manufacturers is given.
